Commercial licensing
For companies shipping ESPectre in closed-source ESP-IDF firmware.
Using ESPectre at home or at work? It’s free. ESPectre is open source under GPLv3. Anyone can install and use it at no cost, and you can even sell devices that run it if their firmware is also released under GPLv3. You only need a commercial license to ship ESPectre inside closed-source firmware.

LICENSE DETAILS
What’s included?
The license gives you a perpetual right to use ESPectre in proprietary firmware within the agreed scope, free of GPLv3’s copyleft obligations. It also includes certification of your hardware and the first year of maintenance and technical support. After the first year, you can renew maintenance to keep getting updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support. Integration work is quoted separately.
What if I don’t renew maintenance?
You can keep using, modifying, and shipping the versions your perpetual license covers, within the agreed product scope. To get later versions and continued support, renew maintenance.
Who and what does the license cover?
Each license covers one legal entity and can’t be transferred. The agreement lists the ESPectre components, versions, product models, and permitted revisions it covers, and for Enterprise it also defines the scope. You can license the core, runtime, Native, and Matter components. ESPHome stays GPLv3-only, and third-party license terms still apply.
Can I use ESPectre for free, or try it first?
Yes. ESPectre is licensed under GPLv3, which allows commercial use and sales as long as you follow its terms. You don’t need a commercial license to evaluate ESPectre internally, and you don’t have to publish changes you keep in-house. We also offer a time-limited commercial evaluation agreement.
